An electrical contractor license applicant will need a North Carolina letter of bondability<\/strong> in order to receive a license to operate in the state. \u00a0Licensing is required of anyone that engages\u00a0in the business of installing, maintaining, altering or repairing any electric work, wiring, devices, appliances or equipment. In addition to the basic application for a license to provide these services, the applicant must also\u00a0furnish a North Carolina letter of bondability<\/strong>\u00a0(also known as a “statement of bonding ability”) completed by a corporate surety that is licensed to do business in North Carolina. \u00a0The statement must verify the applicant’s ability to furnish performance bonds for electrical contracting projects. \u00a0There are three levels of licensing but only two levels of certificates of bondability. \u00a0Limited licensess need statement of bonding ability<\/strong> however but are limited to jobs of up to $40,000. \u00a0 If the applicant requests an intermediate level license then he or she must provide a North Carolina letter of bondability<\/strong> evidencing a surety certification in excess of $40,000. \u00a0What this means is that the intermediate licensee can\u00a0engage in a single electrical contracting project of a value not in excess of one hudred ten thousand dollars ($110,000) and on which the equipment or installation in the contract is rated at not more than 600 volts. \u00a0If the applicant requests an unlimited level license then he or she must provide a North Carolina letter of bondability<\/strong> evidencing a surety certification in excess of $110,000.
