A Minnesota electrical contractor bond is required from all candidates for an electrician's license pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 326B and Minnesota Rules, Chapters 3800 and 3801. The licensing section addresses qualification classes for responsible master electricians and power limited technicians. A compendium of the regulatory requirements may be viewed here.
The Minnesota electrical contractor surety bond and worker's compensation coverage are two mandatory insurance instruments. The surety bond is contemplated within §326B.0921. The bond guarantees the electrical contractor's performance of all work contracted for and/or performed in the state of Minnesota, and for the benefit of any person injured or suffering financial loss by reason of the licensee's failure to comply with the requirements of the regulations, the State Building Code and all contracts entered into. The electrical contractor surety bond must be filed with the Commissioner on the state-specific bond form and issued by a corporate surety licensed to do business in the state of Minnesota. The penal sum of the bond is twenty five thousand dollars ($25,000), is cumulative in nature and must be aggregated every two years that the bond is in force however the aggregate liability of the surety company is limited to the bond penalty shown on the bond form for each two-year period that the bond is in effect.
