New Jersey Elevator, Escalator and Moving Walkway Mechanic Bond

New legislation has been enacted requiring a New Jersey elevator, escalator and moving walkway mechanic license bond from all operators and imposes new examination and experience requirements. New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has established the Elevator, Escalator, and Moving Walkway Mechanics Licensing Board. The licensing regulations include some grandfathering authority for current practitioners and grant a twelve (12) month period for compliance with the new law. The elevator, escalator and moving walkway mechanic bond is described in Chapter 71 (C.45:14H-12) of the general statutes.

Pursuant to the statute, "no elevator mechanic licensed under the may perform any construction work in New Jerseay unless and until the mechanic has filed a surety bond in favor of the State of New Jersey in a sum established by the Board $10,000), executed by a surety company authorized to transact business in the State of New Jersey and approved by the Department of Banking and Insurance. The elevator mechanic bond must be conditioned upon the faithful performance of the provisions of the new state act and Board regulations. No municipality may require similar surety bond from any elevator mechanic licensed under the new act. The escalator mechanic bond must be valid for a term of twelve (12) months at which time it must be renewed for for a similar period."
