If you are launching or currently operating a commercial driver training school in North Carolina, state law requires you to provide a North Carolina Commercial Driver Training School Surety Bond. This bond is a critical component of compliance with the “Rules and Regulations Governing Licensing of Commercial Driver Training Schools and Instructors” established by the North Carolina Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, under the authority of Article 14, Chapter 20 of the North Carolina General Statutes.
The surety bond requirement is mandated by Section .0700 of these administrative rules. The bond serves as a financial guarantee that the school will uphold its contractual obligations with enrolled students. Specifically, it ensures that the school will provide the promised instruction and refund any tuition or fees in the event that it fails to fulfill the terms of a training contract. If a school does not deliver services as agreed, students are protected by this $20,000 bond obligation. The bond must be issued by a surety company licensed to do business in North Carolina and is payable to the School Bus and Traffic Safety Section of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. The bond remains in effect unless canceled by the surety, with at least 30 days’ written notice provided to the DMV. Contact information as follows:
